As a general rule we don’t supply our drawings in DXF or DWG format, and we might add that most architectural firms don’t either. Let us explain. DXF or DWG format are “live” files and as such are editable. What that means is that the chain of custody and responsibility for the integrity of information is infinitely more difficult to track. The drawings have all our templates and revision information and “look” exactly like the one and only original set in our possession. A couple of revisions down the road this live file has the potential to be mixed with or substituted for our original drawings, causing confusion at the very least and possibly some very costly mistakes; with no one really knowing why or what happened. Any changes in the live file returned to us, represents the equivalent of a needle in a haystack to discern any and all changes. You can see we much prefer to supply PDF’s and the more standard redline process, where corrections are noted on top of the PDF image. We then are solely responsible for the editing and correcting process, as it should be.
We will however, provide you with DWG files but only for the purpose of overlaying on your files, imported or exported onto your plans, detail coordination with other trades etc., but NOT for the purpose of redline approval as described above.
